You don’t understand that the entire point of the city is that people are too poor to move or even live, you don’t understand that poverty and corruption kills, you don’t understand that the some of the villains are a metaphor for what happens when people are desperate and pushed to the brink and crushed by capitalism, you don’t understand the entire point of the story.”
100x this. And, on the flip side, there’s also something interesting to dig into with Gotham being sort of… cursed? In the American Gothic sense. The rich who live in Gotham are often tied to poisoned lineages and madness and cults. You know, the rich probably would be safer and less often robbed/murdered/backstabbed/poisoned if they moved to, say, Metropolis. But the ones who were willing to leave have already left, and the rest stay because Gotham is an ancient rotten manor that sustains and eats its own. Gotham is the House of Usher on a larger scale. You may work in the house of Usher because you have nowhere else to go, because your family lives in the town here and your mother is sick and you need the money, and maybe because you’ve sunk this much now so you have to ride it out. But you live in the House of Usher because it’s your home. And you can’t let it go. Welcome to Gotham, everything is on fire.
